Heating

Heat can

Predict the temperature rise from a heater running for 60 s.

E = mcΔθ

Apparatus

  • Insulated can of water
  • Immersion heater
  • Thermometer
  • c = 4 200 J/kg °C

Method

  1. Set the mass of water and the heater power. Leave heat loss off for the first run.
  2. Predict Δθ = Pt / (mc) for 60 s.
  3. Heat for 60 s and read the thermometer.
  4. Turn heat loss on and run again. The rise should be smaller.

Real heaters, steam, and hot cans burn. This one does not.

Without losses, the rise matches E = Pt = mcΔθ. The model stops at 100 °C.
